School Outreach and EIA Awareness Presentation
Day 4 of Environment Week focused on community outreach, environmental education, and raising awareness of environmental governance through a series of activities involving schools and government stakeholders.
The day began with visits to schools across Funafuti, including Nauti Primary School, Seventh Day Adventist School, and several pre-schools, where officers from the Department of Environment distributed gifts and stationery supplies to students. The initiative aimed to encourage learning while strengthening environmental awareness among children from an early age.
During the school visits, students were engaged through discussions on the importance of caring for the environment and their role in protecting Tuvalu’s natural resources for future generations. The outreach activities also provided an opportunity for the Department to connect directly with young learners and promote environmental stewardship within schools.
At 10:00 a.m., the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Team delivered an EIA Awareness Presentation to the DCC. The presentation was attended by Permanent Secretaries and senior representatives from government ministries. The session highlighted the purpose and importance of the Environmental Impact Assessment process in Tuvalu, including its role in identifying, assessing, and managing potential environmental impacts associated with development projects.
The presentation also emphasized the importance of integrating environmental considerations into planning and decision-making processes to support sustainable development and ensure compliance with national environmental legislation.
In the afternoon, at 2:00 p.m., the Department of Environment continued its outreach activities with a visit to Fetuvalu Secondary School, where students received gifts and stationery supplies. The visit provided another opportunity to engage with youth, promote environmental awareness, and encourage students to become active participants in environmental protection initiatives within their communities.
The Department of Environment extends its appreciation to the schools, teachers, students, and government officials who participated in the day’s activities. Day 4 highlighted the importance of investing in environmental education and strengthening awareness at all levels, from young students to senior decision-makers, as part of the collective effort to build a sustainable future for Tuvalu.
