The Chemical Unit is responsible for The Chemical Management Unit within the Department of
Environment plays a central role in safeguarding human health and the environment in Tuvalu
through the sound management of chemicals. The Unit is responsible for developing and
implementing the National Chemicals Management Policy in line with the Department’s vision and
strategic goals, while maintaining a centralized chemical database to support informed decision-
making and effective monitoring. The Unit also fulfills Tuvalu’s reporting obligations to key
international agreements, including the Stockholm Convention and the Minamata Convention. In
collaboration with the Department of Waste Management, the Unit works to ensure the safe handling
and environmentally sound disposal of chemicals and hazardous substances. Through its work, the
unit raises public awareness on the impacts of chemicals, investigating chemical-related incidents and
exposures, and promoting chemical safety practices across sectors such as schools, healthcare
laboratories and other relevant stakeholders.
