Global Environment Facility (GEF)
The Global Environment Facility (GEF) was one of the largest and oldest multilateral financing mechanisms that supports developing countries in addressing global environmental challenges while promoting sustainable development. Established in 1991, the GEF provides funding for projects that protect biodiversity, combat climate change, reduce land degradation, improve international waters,
and strengthen the sound management of chemicals and waste. In Tuvalu, the GEF supports national priorities through projects that enhance environmental protection, strengthen resilience to climate change, and promote the sustainable management of natural resources. The Department of Environment serves as the technical advisor to the Operational Focal Point and the Political Focal Point, coordinating the development and implementation of GEF-funded projects in collaboration with national and international partners.

GEF Non-STAR Funding Opportunities.
Non-STAR funding supports global, regional, and multi-country initiatives that are not financed through national STAR allocations. These funds are available for focal areas such as international waters, chemicals and waste, integrated programs, global and regional projects, and enabling activities.
