The Director of Environment provides overall leadership and strategic direction for the Department of Environment and is responsible for overseeing the implementation of national environmental policies, legislation, programmes, and projects.
The Director works closely with national, regional, and international partners to strengthen environmental governance, promote sustainable development, and address environmental challenges facing Tuvalu.
Working under the authority of the Minister and through the Permanent Secretary, the Director ensures that development activities are assessed and managed in a manner that minimises environmental harm while supporting sustainable development. The role also includes coordinating technical expertise, guiding departmental decision-making, and ensuring compliance with applicable legislation and environmental assessment requirements.
Key Responsibilities
The Director of Environment is responsible for:
- Providing leadership and management of the Department of Environment.
- Administering environmental laws, regulations, and policies.
- Overseeing Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) processes and environmental permitting.
- Coordinating biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management programmes.
- Supporting national climate change adaptation and resilience initiatives.
- Managing chemicals, waste, and pollution control programmes.
- Representing Tuvalu at regional and international environmental meetings and negotiations.
- Strengthening environmental awareness and community engagement.
